Knicks Marketing

New York, NY: (Oct-02-07) Anucha Browne Sanders, 44, once senior vice president for marketing, brought a lawsuit against Cablevision Systems Corp., owner of Madison Square Garden (MSG) and the New York Knicks, and its Chief Executive Officer James Dolan, alleging that she faced sexual harassment and was retaliated against while on her job. Sanders claimed that she was harassed by Knicks coach Isiah Thomas and was subjected to a hostile work environment by Thomas and MSG and fired by Dolan in January 2006 for complaining.

As part of a settlement reached, jurors ordered that Cablevision Systems Corp. James Dolan, 52, must pay $11.6 million to resolve the lawsuit. The jury of four women and three men found that Thomas and MSG discriminated against Browne Sanders, who originally sought $9.6 million. MSG, which must pay $6 million for the discrimination and $2.6 million for retaliation, said it would appeal. Dolan, who must pay $3 million for retaliation, declined to comment. Cablevision may also have to pay compensatory damages, a matter the judge will decide. Taking the case to trial subjected the Knicks and Thomas to a steady stream of negative publicity as New York tabloids splashed key testimony on their front pages.
