Inflated Drug Prices
Boston, MA: (Oct-06-07) The state brought a lawsuit against Barr Pharmaceuticals Inc., alleging that the company inflated drug prices. Reports show that Barr was among 13 generic drug makers sued by the Massachusetts attorney general in a federal complaint. It is believed that at least one other company has settled, while litigation is pending against others. The suit claimed that the companies inflated prices in reports to national pricing services. Sources claim that the state's Medicaid program uses the services to set reimbursement rates for Medicaid participants. As part of a settlement reached, Barr Pharmaceuticals agreed to a $2 million payout to resolve the drug pricing lawsuit. Company officials claimed that the settlement with New Jersey-based Barr involves prices set by subsidiaries Barr Laboratories and Duramed Pharmaceuticals.
