Power Generator Pollution
Washington, DC: (Oct-08-07) A federal lawsuit was brought against Columbus, Ohio-based American Electric Power, alleging that pollution from the nation's largest power generator had caused lasting damage on Northeast mountain ranges and national landmarks. As part of a settlement reached, American Electric Power, which caters to over 5 million customers in 11 states, agreed to spend $4.6 billion to reduce pollution at its facilities. Sources claimed that the settlement requires American Electric Power to reduce acid rain-causing chemical emissions by at least 69% over the next decade. The company was also fined an additional $15 million in civil penalties and another $60 million in cleanup and mitigation costs to help heal parkland and waterways that have been hurt by the pollution.
