Police Bribe
Las Cruces, NM: (Oct-09-07) Mayra Leyva brought a police misconduct lawsuit against the city, alleging that Anthony Coble, a former Las Cruces police officer requested a kiss from her. Leyva, 22, stated that Coble, 39, asked for a hug and kiss in exchange for tearing up traffic citations. Leyva reported that the officer asked her to follow him to the fire station at Roadrunner Parkway and Northrise Drive where Coble reportedly made the request. She complied and Coble allegedly ripped up the citations. In her lawsuit, Leyva alleged civil rights violations and personal injury caused by the officer. As part of a settlement reached, though the city did not admit any wrongdoing, it agreed to pay Leyva $40,000 to resolve the allegations and end the lawsuit. Coble has a pending criminal case that resulted from the traffic stop. In April 2005, he was charged with receiving a bribe by a public employee, illegally disposing a traffic citation, and tampering with public records; charges that could have carried a maximum sentence of over four years.
