School Property Tax
Osceola County, FL: (Oct-09-07) The Remington Community Development District (CDD) brought charges against the Education Foundation Osceola County, alleging that the foundation owed the district money from previous assessments. The CDD sued the foundation over assessments it said it was owed on P.M. Wells Charter Academy in order to help pay off bonds issued for community improvements. The lawsuit stated that the issue resulted from the fact that P.M Wells is a charter school and not a purely public school. It also argued those assessments were in place when the foundation took over the land, which was ceded to it by the P.M. Wells family in 2000.
As part of a settlement reached, the CDD stated that the foundation must pay the district $250,000 on the Kissimmee property. Sources claimed that the school district will also contribute $35,000 to help the foundation pay its legal fees. In June 2007, Florida law was amended to exempt charter schools from paying assessments. The settlement frees the charter school from paying special assessments in the future. The CDD and the Foundation will ask the Osceola County Board of Commissioners to amend the boundaries of the CDD to exclude P.M. Wells from its boundaries. [ORLANDO SENTINEL: SCHOOL PROPERTY TAX]
