Stolen Phones
Sacramento, CA: (Oct-10-07) The California attorney general's office brought charges against AT&T's cellular phone business, alleging that the company charged customers for calls made from lost or stolen phones. The suit was filed after several customers complained, alleging that they were charged thousands of dollars for calls made on cell phones that were stolen. It stated that although customers documented the calls were unauthorized, AT&T refused to credit the accounts.
As part of a settlement reached, AT&T agreed to assist customers in getting refunds on unauthorized charges for phones lost or stolen from 2003 to present. AT&T will send notices inside customers' bills explaining how they can request refunds either online or by telephone. Additionally, AT&T agreed to pay the state $500,000 for legal and other expenses involved in its investigation. The settlement also stipulated that AT&T must inform all customers of their legal rights regarding charges related to lost or stolen phones. Those rights include having the case investigated within 30 days, the right to withhold disputed charges during an investigation and the right to appeal the outcome of an investigation to the California Public Utilities Commission.
