Libel Columnist
Kane County, IL: (Oct-12-07) Robert Thomas, chief justice of the Illinois Supreme Court, brought charges against the Kane County Chronicle and former Chronicle columnist Bill Page, alleging that he was maligned in a series of columns that criticized him. Thomas sued over columns written by Page in 2003, relying on anonymous sources that criticized Thomas' handling of the misconduct case of former Kane County State's Attorney Meg Gorecki.
As part of a settlement reached, the libel suit was resolved after the Chronicle agreed to a payout. Sources estimate that the case was settled for $3 million. As part of the deal, the Chronicle's attorneys agreed to drop all appeals of the case at the federal and state levels. Those appeals stemmed from a libel verdict against the newspaper in November 2006, when a jury awarded Thomas $7 million. Records showed that a judge later pared the award to $4 million, which the newspaper continued to fight until the recent $3 million settlement. [KANE COUNTY CHRONICLE: LIBEL NEWSPAPER]
