Waste Site Explosion
Raleigh, NC: (Oct-15-07) The North Carolina Division of Waste Management brought charges against Environmental Quality, after the company's hazardous waste site in Apex burst into flames in October 2006. The suit sought to divest the company of its permit.
As part of a settlement reached, the company agreed to pay more than $400,000 in penalties, fees and reimbursement for the state's expenses related to the case. The settlement is said to follow a March 2007 report by the state, which proposed an administrative penalty of more than $550,000 in addition to the loss of EQ's hazardous waste permit. Under the deal, EQ also agreed to give up its permit as a state report revealed that EQ failed to report past problems at its Apex site to the state, as it should have.
