City and Mayor Whistleblower
Detroit, MI: (Oct-18-07) A whistleblower lawsuit was brought against the city of Detroit and Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, by officers Gary Brown and Harold Nelthrope. The suit alleged that Kilpatrick engaged in extramarital affairs and claimed that he was involved in other misdeeds by his security unit. The two former officers also claimed that they were unlawfully dismissed. A Wayne County Circuit Court jury in September 2007 agreed the mayor and city unlawfully dismissed the officers.
As part of a settlement reached, the officers received payouts that totaled more than $8 million. Kilpatrick denied the allegations and vowed to appeal the verdict. In a recent development, it came to light that the city and Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick are expected to drop their planned appeal of a $6.5 million judgment against them. [MLIVE: CITY MAYOR WHISTLEBLOWER]
