Apartment Management
Santa Clara, CA: (Oct-19-07) The Santa Clara County District Attorney's office filed charges against apartment management company Archstone-Smith, over the company's water billing practices towards tenants. The suit accused Archstone-Smith of using unlawful methods for determining tenants' water usage at apartment complexes in several California counties. The suit questioned how tenants were billed for that usage between June 2002 and the present. According to the suit, the company used practices that did not completely comply with all state and local laws.
Though the company did not admit to the allegations or accept any wrongdoing, it agreed to pay almost $683,000 to resolve litigation. Further, the company also agreed to pay restitution to tenants who lived at 17 complexes where water bills were misstated because of the company's metering policies. Two of those complexes, Harborside and Redwood Shores, are located in San Mateo County. [CBS NEWS: APARTMENT WATER BILLS]
