Storm Sewer Death
Omaha, NE: (Oct-23-07) The family of Chad Sieger brought a wrongful death lawsuit against the city, after the man drowned when he was washed into an Omaha storm sewer in 2004. Reports state that Sieger, 29, of Bellevue was driving near 108th Street and Borman Avenue in a heavy rainstorm on July 22, 2004, when his car stalled. Police said he got out of his car, fell into a storm ditch and was swept into a culvert. His body was discovered more than 20 miles away in the Missouri River.
As part of a settlement agreement reached by the parties, the city agreed to pay the family $207,500 to resolve the lawsuit. Under the agreement, Sieger's stepfather will drop the Douglas County District Court lawsuit filed against the city. Sources stated that the settlement was reached as the suit was supposed to go to trial shortly. Had the trial gone forward, the city could have faced a $1 million payout.
