Hydroelectric Dam Land
Helena, MT: (Oct-24-07) The state of Montana brought charges against Avista Corp., as part of its effort to collect rent payments for state owned land underneath hydroelectric dams. Records show that Avista, of Spokane, WA, owns Avista Utilities, which serves about 350,000 electricity customers in Eastern Washington and northern Idaho.
As part of a settlement reached, Avista agreed to pay the state $4 million a year in rent. In an earlier settlement, the state agreed for a $50,000 a year payout from PacifiCorp, for a relatively small dam on the Swan River. PPL Montana, which owns more dams and could be hit with a much larger bill, continued its court fight against the state, making it the only utility that hasn't settled yet.
