Immigration Officer
El Paso, TX: (Oct-24-07) Maria Antonieta Martinez-Aguero brought charges against the city, alleging that she was physically abused by an immigration officer at the Paso del Norte Bridge in 2001. The suit named the Department of Homeland Security as a defendant. Martinez-Aguero, 53, of Juarez, said that former INS agent Humberto Gonzalez, now a Border Patrol agent, abused her, grabbed her, twisted her arms behind her back, shoved her against a wall, and kicked her without provocation. She said she suffered an epileptic seizure because of the episode.
As part of a settlement reached, the Department of Homeland Security agreed to pay the woman $95,000 to resolve the four-year-long suit. Martinez-Aguero's legal counsel stated that they obviously saw this as a vindication because it is a significant sum of money and the government doesn't usually settle such cases.
