Optometrist Harassment
Lufkin, TX: (Oct-25-07) Four women brought a lawsuit against Dr. S.J. Charendoff, a Lufkin optometrist with National Vision Inc., alleging that they were sexually harassed by him. The women's complaints stemmed from alleged incidents in 2003 and 2004 where they said Charendoff rubbed their arms, backs and shoulders, and claimed that he rubbed his crotch on one of the women. The suit was filed by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission in September 2006, where the commission stated that Charendoff's alleged actions violated the Civil Rights act of 1964.
As part of a settlement reached, National Vision Inc. has agreed to pay a total of $175,000 to the women to resolve allegations. Apart from the payout, National Vision also agreed to provide employee training on handling sexual harassment; provide quarterly reports to the EEOC on complaints from its Texas and Louisiana stores; and will post notices in those stores informing employees of their rights regarding sexual harassment.
