Oil Rig Racial Discrimination
Birmingham, AL: (Oct-25-07) Seven black workers filed charges against Tulsa, OK-based Helmerich & Payne International Drilling Co., alleging that they were subjected to hangman's nooses in a racially hostile environment on an offshore oil rig. The suit was filed with the assistance of the US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), who claimed that the workers were racially harassed on a rig in the Gulf of Mexico. The workers alleged that apart from being subjected to hangman's nooses and a hostile environment, they were also subjected to derogatory racial language and race based name calling. Helmerich Vice President and General Counsel Steve Mackey stated that it was never determined whether the alleged harassment came from H&P employees or workers from other companies on the rig.
As part of a settlement reached, the company, who claimed that they investigated such incidents when it was notified, agreed to pay the seven $290,000, ending the discrimination lawsuit. [HEMSCOTT: OIL RIG DISCRIMINATION]
