Recovery House

Sarasota, FL: (Oct-29-07) The Justice Department and the federal government brought lawsuits against Sarasota County, FL, alleging that the county discriminated against persons with disabilities when it refused to allow group homes for persons in recovery from alcohol and substance abuse to operate. Reports show that the federal government filed the lawsuit in June 2006 in the US District Court for the Middle District of Florida, stating that the County's 2004 zoning decision that would have closed group homes for persons in recovery from alcohol and substance abuse was motivated by intentional disability discrimination. The lawsuit further accused the county of refusing to grant a reasonable accommodation and retaliating against the operator of the homes, Renaissance Manor Inc., by refusing to award county grant funding. As part of a settlement reached, the Justice Department announced that the county will pay $760,000 to settle the two lawsuits. [WEBWIRE: RECOVERY HOMES]
