Zylon Bulletproof Vests

New York, NY: (Oct-30-07) The US Justice Department brought a lawsuit against Hexcel Corp., alleging that the aerospace supplier made defective bulletproof vests used by law enforcement agencies. The suit claimed that the vests were purchased and used by the US directly and by various state, local, and tribal law enforcement agencies reimbursed with federal funds. The Justice department alleged that Hexcel knew that the Zylon fiber it wove into fabric used in bulletproof vests was defective and degraded quickly when exposed to heat, light and humidity; and in concealing this knowledge, violated the False Claims Act. Sources stated that the Zylon was supplied by Japan's Toyobo Corp. and the vests were sold by Second Chance Body Armor, DHB Inc. and its subsidiaries, Armor Holdings and its subsidiaries, and Gator Hawk Armor.

As part of a settlement reached, Hexcel Corp. agreed to pay $15 million to resolve allegations. Additionally, it agreed to cooperate in the government's ongoing investigation of other participants involved in actions alleged to have violated the False Claims Act. [CNN NEWS: BULLETPROOF VESTS]
