PolarGuard Fire
Providence, RI: (Oct-31-07) Survivors of a 2003 nightclub fire and relatives of the 100 people killed brought a lawsuit against Home Depot and Polar Industries Inc., alleging that negligence on the part of the two companies resulted in the catastrophe. Records state that over 300 people brought the lawsuit after a devastating fire broke out at The Station nightclub in West Warwick, claiming over 100 lives. The suit claimed that the fire began when pyrotechnics ignited by the rock band Great White set ablaze flammable soundproofing foam around the stage. The plaintiffs accused Polar Industries of manufacturing and selling insulation that sources stated was dangerous and defective. The material, called PolarGuard, was placed in the ceiling of the drummer's alcove by a prior club owner for soundproofing purposes. Home Depot, the world's largest home improvement store chain, sold the material.
As part of a settlement reached, Atlanta-based Home Depot and the Connecticut insulation company have tentatively agreed to a $5 million payout to resolve litigation. Sources claim that 90 defendants still remain. With the recent settlement, the total payout for the fire stands at $18.5 million. [WJBF NEWS: POLARGUARD FIRE]
