El Monte Superfund
Los Angeles, CA: (Oct-31-07) The federal government brought charges against nearly 40 parties in relation to the cleanup of the South El Monte area of the San Gabriel Valley Superfund site. The suit claimed that according to a US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) report, the site was added to the National Priorities List in 1984, after industrial solvents and other materials contaminated soil and groundwater with volatile organic compounds, perchlorate and other chemicals.
As part of a settlement reached, sources confirmed that the EPA and the US Department of Justice reached a $12.5 million payout with 39 individuals and businesses. Three local water companies are currently operating cleanup systems. EPA officials claimed that the agency will use funds from the latest settlements to reimburse the water companies through a cooperative agreement with the San Gabriel Basin Water Quality Authority.
