Mine Shaft Accident

Salt Lake City, UT: (Nov-04-07) The families of six miners and three rescue workers who died in the Crandall Canyon mine brought wrongful death charges against the state of Utah. In a recent development, sources claimed that the parties reached a settlement agreement which stands to benefit the plaintiffs. The suit claimed that Kerry Allred, Don Erickson, Luis Hernandez, Carlos Payan, Brandon Phillips, and Manuel Sanchez were trapped Aug. 6, 2007 when the walls of a mine shaft imploded. The men were not found and are presumed dead. During an Aug. 16 rescue attempt the mine shaft crumbled again killing Dale Black, Brandon Kimber, and Mine Safety and Health Administration inspector Gary Jensen. Though the settlement will do little to cover funeral expenses or replace lost wages, compensation was set at $8,000 for miners without dependents. Those with dependents are entitled to payments totaling about $176,000 over six years. [SALT LAKE TRIBUNE: MINE SHAFT ACCIDENT]
