TV Patent
San Francisco, CA: (Nov-09-07) OpenTV brought patent infringement claims against Liberate Technologies Inc. in 2002, over two patents. Following that, records show that Liberate countersued, alleging infringement of four patents. Two of those claims were later dismissed by Liberate. A new deal was worked out between the parties after Liberate sold its technology to TVWorks LLC, a company formerly known as Double C Technologies, a joint venture between Comcast Corp. and Cox Communications.
As part of the deal, TVWorks agreed to pay $1.5 million to OpenTV to release it from past liability. Additionally, Liberate admitted infringing OpenTV patents and a US District Court in San Francisco issued an order restraining Liberate from infringing OpenTV's patents. The move prompted Liberate to drop its countersuit. [SAN FRANCISCO BUSINESS TIMES: TV PATENT]
