Cancer Center Fraud
Minneapolis, MN: (Nov-15-07) The federal government brought charges against the Parker Hughes Cancer Center, following a whistleblower lawsuit filed by a former clinic physician who alleged that the center over billed Medicare and solicited kickbacks. Records show that Dr. Robert Thomas, who stated that he learned of the wrongdoing during the eight months he was employed at the Roseville clinic in 2001, filed the federal lawsuit in 2004. His suit accused the clinic and its former medical director Dr. Fatih Uckun, of over billing the Medicare program for inappropriate administration of intravenous fluids and other cancer treatment. After federal officials examined a statistical sample of Parker Hughes' Medicare claims from 1999 through 2005, they reached a settlement ordering the facility to pay a $150,000 charge.
