Jesuit Priest Abuse
Anchorage, AK: (Nov-18-07) More than 100 Alaska Natives brought charges against the Oregon Province of the Society of Jesus, a Roman Catholic religious order, alleging that they were sexually abused by Jesuit priests. The suits stated that the victims were altar boys, altar servers, and altar girls when they were abused. Victims claimed that when they wished to complain or speak out, they were beaten or told to shut up. Legal counsel said that the Catholic Church first was notified of the Alaska cases of abuse in 2002.
As part of a settlement reached, the Roman Catholic religious order has agreed to pay $50 million to more than 100 Alaska Natives to resolve allegations. Sources stated that the settlement with the Oregon Province of the Society of Jesus is the largest one yet against a Catholic religious order. The settlement does not include those against the Diocese of Fairbanks, which owned and managed the churches in the villages in rural Alaska where the Jesuit priests were assigned.
