Homeless Arrest
Forest Park, IL: (Nov-21-07) Sidney Hooks, a homeless man, filed charges against Sgt. Michael Murphy, a Forest Park police sergeant, alleging that the 17-year veteran of the police department broke his wrist. The grievance was taken to federal court in 2004, where the man claimed that Murphy abused Hooks during the course of an arrest in August 2003. The complaint further stated that the officer falsified a police report on the incident to cover his tracks.
As part of a settlement reached, sources stated that the city agreed to pay Hooks $50,000, resolving his claims against the city. Documents reveal that Murphy was placed on paid administrative leave when the indictment was handed down by a grand jury in late October and is facing a maximum sentence of 30 years in prison and $500,000 in fines.
