Clinical Trail Software
Raleigh, NC: (Nov-27-07) Datasci LLC brought charges against Etrials, a Morrisville company which provides software to help run clinical trials of drugs and medical devices, alleging that it infringed on its patents. Sources claimed that the Datasci case is a chink in the patent system, in which the US Patent & Trademark Office in 2002 essentially granted the company a patent on running clinical trials over the Internet, though Etrials and other companies in the space had been doing just that for years.
As part of a settlement reached, Etrials agreed to pay $1.75 million to settle the patent infringement lawsuit with the Maryland firm. The settlement stated that with the payment of the monies, the company will have no future monetary obligations to Datasci. Datasci has sued multiple electronic data capture companies, winning a record $8.5 million from industry leader Phase Forward. [TRIANGLE BUSINESS JOURNAL: SOFTWARE PATENT]
