Prohibited Waste
Concord, PA: (Nov-29-07) The state brought charges against North Country Environmental Services, alleging that investigations revealed that the facility accepted prohibited waste at its Bethlehem landfill. The violation supposedly took place after the former owner of the Mountain View Grand hotel in Whitefield pleaded guilty to illegally removing and disposing of asbestos during renovations. The company was accused of failing to take enough precautions to prevent prohibited waste from being dumped at its landfill. The company disputed the allegations, but agreed to enter into a settlement by paying $100,000.
The settlement requires North Country Environmental to pay $50,000 to the state and $50,000 to the Hubbard Brook Research Foundation, which conducts environmental education projects in Northern New Hampshire. The company also must cap the Troy Mills solid waste landfill in Troy and hire a consultant to assess and to make recommendations on waste-inspection-and-control procedures at the landfill.
