Farm Manure
Muncie, IN: (Nov-29-07) Prosecutors and state officials filed charges against Jacobus Tielen, 39, of rural Eaton, alleging that he knowingly, intentionally or recklessly violated an environmental management law in operating his farm in Muncie. Sources claimed that the farm had a history of manure spills, including fish kills in February 1999 and July 2004. Tielen was accused of failing to maintain the required minimum distance of the manure level in his farm's manure lagoon. Records show that Tielen faced charges for spilling manure, failing to report a manure spill, a fish kill and other violations.
As part of a settlement reached, Tielen has paid over $21,000 to resolve allegations. Court documents state that The Indiana Department of Environmental Management won a temporary restraining order in June 2005 barring Tielen from further swine breeding at his farm, but a judge later lifted the ban.
