Credit Report
Orlando, FL: (Dec-04-07) Angela Williams, a medical transcription worker, brought charges against Atlanta-based Equifax, alleging that the company failed to correct dramatic errors in Williams' credit report that led to her credit score being trashed. The suit claimed that Williams tried to correct the error and clear up her credit report for nearly a decade, but was unsuccessful. Equifax was accused of repeatedly confusing Williams with someone who had a similar name but whose credit file was rife with bad debt.
As part of a settlement reached, an Orlando jury awarded Williams $219,000 in actual damages and $2.7 million in punitive damages for negligent violation of federal credit reporting laws. The settlement was reached in state Circuit Court in Orlando, and is said to be the largest punitive damages award ever against Equifax. Company officials refused to comment, but stated that it didn't admit any wrongdoing. [ORLANDO SENTINEL: CREDIT SCORE]
