Gender Discrimination
Fresno, CA: (Dec-06-07) Stacy Johnson-Klein, a former Fresno State women's basketball coach, brought a lawsuit against the university, alleging that she was wrongfully terminated. Johnson-Klein was fired in March 2005 after less than three seasons at the Bulldogs' helm. Johnson-Klein stated that she was fired because she advocated for women's rights. In its defense, the university claimed that Johnson-Klein was fired because she was dishonest, potentially dangerous and abusive to her players and assistant coaches. The varsity's legal counsel depicted Johnson-Klein as a self-centered manipulator who ignored her players' welfare and ran roughshod over university policies in her pursuit of money, fame and power. Despite that, the jury awarded Johnson-Klein $19.1 million, resolving the sexual discrimination lawsuit. The controversial coach claimed that the verdict was a victory for women in general and proof that the legal systems work.
