Holocaust Legal Fees Settlement
New York, NY: (Dec-09-07) Burt Neuborne, a professor at New York University Law School, was one of the lawyers who filed a lawsuit against Credit Suisse, UBS AG and other Swiss banks in the 1990s on behalf of Holocaust survivors, alleging that the banks looted millions of dollars of Jewish assets. As part of a settlement reached with the defendants, the lawyer helped distribute a $1.25 billion settlement to the Holocaust survivors, resolving that case.
Neuborne has since filed charges, stating that he was owed $5.7 million in legal fees after the distribution was concluded. Records stated that a group of about 20 survivors objected to his application, claiming that he had agreed to do the work for free. The issue was brought before a federal magistrate, who recommended that Neuborne receive $3.1 million. Last week, US District Court Judge Frederic Block approved that settlement in Brooklyn federal court. [DESERET NEWS: HOLOCAUST VICTIMS PAY]
