Torture Settlement

Chicago, IL: (Dec-08-07) Aaron Patterson, Leroy Orange, Stanley Howard and Madison Hobley brought charges against the city and its police department, alleging that they were tortured by former Chicago Police Lt. Jon Burge and his Area 2 cohorts. Sources stated that in 2006, the city reached a tentative, $14.8 million settlement with Orange, Howard and Hobley. All three men were allegedly coerced into murder confessions by Burge and his cohorts, only to be pardoned and released from Death Row in 2003. In a recent development, the city agreed to pay a combined $19.8 million settlement to the four plaintiffs to resolve the discrimination and torture claims. The settlement is said to go a long way to help newly appointed Chicago Police Supt. Jody Weis re-establish trust between citizens and police in the African-American community.
