Racial Slurs
Mentor, OH: (Dec-11-07) The city of Mentor brought charges against Michael McDonald, a 16-year-old Mentor boy, after he was found to have left a racist note at the home of a black family. The charges stemmed from McDonald leaving a box marked with the letters "KKK" in the driveway of Sylvia Spikes, who had just moved into the predominantly white neighborhood. Sources close to the case revealed that the box contained bananas and had racial slurs scrawled inside. Shortly after the incident, a Lake County Juvenile Court jury found McDonald guilty of aggravated menacing, ethnic intimidation and criminal trespass. Records show that McDonald served eight days in juvenile detention. In a recent development, a settlement approved by US District Judge Kathleen O'Malley in Cleveland ordered McDonald to pay $128,500 to the Spikes family to resolve the civil lawsuit. McDonald was also ordered to apologize in writing to Spikes' family.
