Record Keeping

Jacksonville, FL: (Dec-17-07) The Internal Revenue Services (IRS) brought charges against the city of Jacksonville, after a recent audit uncovered record keeping flaws. The suit stated that the city allowed employees to use city issued phones for personal business, without counting any portion of the service as taxable income. Further, it was accused of allowing some retirees to defer more income than legally allowed and permitted other retirees to improperly use tax deferred income to pay health insurance premiums. As part of a settlement reached, the city agreed to pay the IRS $140,380 to resolve allegations. [FLORIDA TIMES UNION: CITY RECORDS]
