Indian Health Care
Anchorage, AK: (Dec-18-07) The Yukon-Kuskokwim Health Corp., an Alaska Native group, filed charges against the federal government over health care costs. Sources claimed that in the state, the Indian Health Care Service (IHS) contracts out Native health care to tribal organizations, with a promise to give them enough money to run hospitals, clinics and treatment centers for Native beneficiaries. The suit claimed that the government failed to provide for this, breaching their promise to do so. Reports show that the nonpayment adds up to hundreds of millions of dollars and have forced Native health care organizations around the state to cut much-needed services. Records state that people in the Yukon-Kuskokwim region are suffering from high cancer mortality rates, diabetes, dental problems and a suicide rate that is four times the national average. As part of a settlement reached, the federal government agreed to pay the Yukon-Kuskokwim Health Corp. $48 million, the highest ever settlement payout in Indian health care history.
