Pressure Cooker
Washington, DC: (Dec-27-07) The Consumer Product Safety Commission brought charges against the Home Shopping Network, alleging that the company failed to promptly warn consumers about dangerous pressure cookers that were blamed for burning at least 37 consumers. The suit against the Home Shopping Network also named its partner companies over defects in Welbilt electronic pressure cookers sold between September 2001 and November 2002. Sources stated that the lawsuit stemmed from the network's failure to inform the commission, as required by law, of about 25 reports the company allegedly received of defects in the pressure cooker between September 2001 and October 2004.
As part of a settlement reached, the Home Shopping Network has agreed to pay the government an $875,000 civil settlement, resolving allegations. As part of the settlement, the company denied that it was aware of 25 reports about problems with the appliance and acknowledged no responsibility for failing to promptly warn consumers about danger of using the pressure cooker. The network also denied not adequately reporting to the product safety commission any risks associated with the cooker. [USA TODAY: PRESSURE COOKER]
