Abortion Rights
This is a settlement for the Civil / Human Rights lawsuit.
Topeka, KS: (Jan-02-08) Troy Newman, president of the anti-abortion group Operation Rescue, brought charges against Vaughn Flora, a legislator, alleging that his civil rights were violated. The suit stemmed from an altercation between the two at the Kansas State Fair. The altercation occurred in September 2006, as Gov. Kathleen Sebelius, a Democrat seeking her second term, was debating her Republican opponent at the fair before more than 2,000 spectators. Newman was wearing a cockroach costume to protest Sebelius' abortion policies. The lawsuit claimed that Flora ripped Newman's mask off his face, leaving a 2-inch cut. Newman claimed he wore the costume so he could be anonymous and focus attention on his cause. He alleged that Flora struck him at least twice, making him fear for his safety. As part of a settlement reached, both parties reached a memorandum of understanding and agreed mutually, to keep the terms of the agreement confidential.
