Heating Oil Spill
Oxford, CT: (Jan-03-08) The Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection brought charges against Quaker Farms Elementary School, over environmental damage that resulted from the 2006 heating oil spill at the school. Sources stated that over 3,000 gallons of heating oil were missing from the 6,000-gallon tank when it was unearthed before Thanksgiving in 2006. Investigations revealed a small tear was found on the tank's bottom.
As part of a settlement reached with the school, the Board of Education has been ordered to pay a $13,000 fine to resolve the dispute. Records show that the initial consent order had the town facing a $25,000 fine, but it was reduced as the town was proactive in cleaning up the spill and followed DEP rules once the leak was reported.
