Auto Dealer Advertising
This is a settlement for the Automotive lawsuit.
Boston, MA: (Jan-03-08) State Attorney General Martha Coakley's office brought charges against eight Massachusetts auto dealerships, alleging that they used misleading techniques in newspaper ads to attract car buyers. The suit claimed that some dealers misrepresented rebates that weren't universally available by failing to conspicuously display certain conditions of eligibility for those rebates. The companies named in the lawsuit were The Herb Chambers Cos., Quirk Works Inc., Ira Motor Group, Kelly Automotive Group, The Colonial Dealerships, Connolly Buick Co., Liberty Motorcar Inc., and Village Automotive Group.
As part of a settlement reached, the eight defendants agreed to pay a consolidated $290,000 to resolve accusations. Apart from the monetary payout, the companies also agreed to stop using certain kinds of marketing techniques such as promising a certain price while requiring an up-front payment or vehicle trade-in to get that price. The suit had claimed that in many cases, the prices were advertised with asterisks, and the additional requirement was explained elsewhere in the ad. The financial penalties are said to range from $20,000 to $75,000. [PATRIOT LEDGER: AUTO DEALER ADVERTISING]
