Sprayground Chlorine
Worcester, MA: (Jan-04-08) Martha Coakley, State Attorney General, brought charges against Haverhill-based Cedardale Inc., alleging that the operator of the largest health club facility in New England discharged chlorine into the Merrimack River. The suit stemmed from a complaint filed, related to an incident in the summer of 2004, when Cedardale was accused of discharging chlorine from the sprayground into a brook that feeds the Merrimack. The suit stated that the state Department of Environmental Protection found that the discharge to the river, Cedardale's second such violation since 2002, killed fish and other aquatic life.
As part of a settlement reached, Cedardale Inc. agreed to pay $20,000 to resolve allegations. Additionally, it promised to direct discharge from its pools or children's "sprayground" to the Haverhill wastewater treatment plant. [WORCESTER BUSINESS JOURNAL: CHLORINE CONTAMINATION]
