Activist Protest
New York, NY: (Jan-09-08) The National Council of Arab Americans and Act Now to Stop War & End Racism, two activist groups, brought a federal lawsuit against the city, alleging that they were prevented from using Central Park's Great Lawn to protest the Republican National Convention in 2004. The groups had argued their free-speech rights were violated by the city's restrictions. Officials claimed that the two sides had reached a settlement with the city agreeing to pay the two groups $50,000 to end the dispute. Under the settlement agreement, the city will also hire three experts to decide whether increasing the six protests allowed on the lawn each year would damage the 13-acre spread, which underwent an $18.2 million restoration in the mid-1990s. Additionally, the city will also pay the groups' their legal fees.
