Hexavalent Chromium
Hudson County, NJ: (Jan-13-08) The Jersey City Incinerator Authority and Jersey City Municipal Authority brought charges against Honeywell Inc., which is based in Morristown, over the company's predecessor; Mutual Chemical Co.'s dumping of hexavalent chromium on city land. Related to the chemical dumping, was a lawsuit brought by the Hackensack Riverkeeper, the environmental group that, since 1997, has worked to clean up the Hackensack River that runs though the western part of Jersey City. The group alleged that much of the chromium ended up seeping into the water. Sources close to the case stated that the parties had reached a settlement, in which Honeywell, in addition to cleaning up the land, agreed to pay $15 million up front in 2008 and $10 million in 2009 to the city, to resolve allegations.
