Employee Racial Harassment

Jessup, MD: (Jan-13-08) The US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) brought charges against Beem Irrigation Inc., a Jessup-based irrigation company, alleging that it discriminated against employees because of their Hispanic origins. The EEOC filed suit on behalf of employees Rene Merino, Marvin Ceron, Ronald Martinez, Nelson Rivas and others, charging that the men were repeatedly subjected to harassment including ethnic and racially derogatory slurs and comments. It also alleged the employees were either discharged in retaliation for complaining of the harassment or forced to resign because of intolerable working conditions.

As part of a settlement reached, sources close to the case stated that the company agreed to a $77,000 payout to resolve allegations. Additionally, the consent decree between Beem Irrigation Inc. and the EEOC also requires the company to revise its policy on race and national harassment and retaliation, to post the revised policy for its employees by mid-January and maintain the advertisement for three years.
