Credit and Debit
Charleston, WV: (Jan-15-08) The State Attorney General Darrell McGraw's office brought charges against Visa USA Inc. and MasterCard International Inc., alleging the two credit card companies engaged in illegal conduct. The suits were filed in October 2003 in Ohio County, charging the companies with violations of the state's antitrust and consumer protection laws. McGraw claimed that the companies used illegal business practices by forcing merchants to accept both credit and debit cards, rather than only one. Records show that merchants such as Target and Wal-Mart brought a similar suit in 1996 and that case was settled in 2003.
As part of a settlement reached, the companies agreed to pay a combined $12.1 million settlement to resolve allegations brought by the state attorney general. Officials claimed that the money will be put in a trust and will be doled out to customers via sales-tax holidays. [CHARLESTON GAZETTE: CREDIT AND DEBIT]
