Chemistry Lab Fire

Hudson, OH: (Jan-17-08) Two students, Calais Weber and Cecelia Chen, brought lawsuits against Hudson's Western Reserve Academy, after they were seriously burned in a chemistry lab fire two years ago. Records show that Calais, now 17, was the most seriously injured in the fire at the private school. Burns covered 46 percent of her body. Calais was taken to the hospital the day of the incident, Jan. 23, 2006, and was released in April 2006. Sources close to the case stated that the academy agreed to resolve the personal injury lawsuits with a payout of $13.15 million to Calais and her family. They will also pay Cecelia, now 17, and her family $5.8 million.

The settlements were reached out of court and did not go to trial. Officials claimed that the two families are using at least $100,000 of the settlement to launch the Ohio Schools Science Safety Program, developed by Jack Gerlovich, a science education professor at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa.
