Police Union Leader

Chandler, AZ: (Jan-18-08) John Carboun, a former Chandler police union leader, brought charges against the city after he was wrongfully fired. Sources stated that he was fired over a letter he wrote to the city manager, and was then reinstated after a Merit Board hearing. Carboun was fired by former Chief Bobby Joe Harris in 2002 after he wrote a letter to former City Manager Donna Dreska regarding departmental safety violations. City officials claimed that the allegations in his letter were false and Carboun violated personnel rules.

As part of a settlement reached, the city agreed to pay Carboun $532,500, to resolve the dispute. In September 2007, and after the jury verdict, Carboun stated that he felt vindicated as his credibility and reputation as a police officer were smeared and his family finances strained to pay legal bills. An 18-year department veteran and a patrol officer, Carboun said the support of the Merit Board, a jury and now the City Council brought closure to his ordeal. [ARIZONA CENTRAL: UNION TERMINATION]
