Buried Waste
New York, NY: (Jan-18-08) The state Department of Environmental Conservation brought a lawsuit against Roth Steel Corp., a metal shredding business located near Onondaga Lake, alleging that the facility had several violations, including improperly disposing of solid waste and hazardous substances, failing to control storm water runoff and failing to prevent petroleum discharges. The suit stated that the charges spanned from the 1990s through fall 2006. Records show that in 1993, former Roth Steel employees said the company improperly buried about 5,000 tons of potentially hazardous waste in a swamp near the Shore of Onondaga Lake. They said the waste from Roth's car-shredding operation was put into a marsh about 12 feet deep and covered with gravel in summer 1990.
As part of a settlement reached, Roth Steel agreed to pay $150,000 and resolve the alleged violations. Additionally, the company must investigate two landfill cells that store shredder fluff, a mix of non-recyclable material left after steel and other metals are recovered. The company will need to find out if contaminants are leaching into Onondaga Lake, and if so, remove and properly dispose of the fluff. [THE POST STANDARD: BURIED WASTE]
