Officer Assault
Chicago, IL: (Jan-21-08) Randle Miles, an elderly man, brought a police misconduct civil lawsuit against the city, alleging that he was brutally assaulted by Officer William Cozzi. Records show that Cozzi, 50, pleaded guilty in 2007 to misdemeanor battery in the 2005 incident. The suit said that there was video evidence that showed Cozzi shackling Miles' legs to the wheelchair, and then striking Miles about 10 times. It claimed that Cook County prosecutors confirmed that Cozzi struck Miles with a small baton.
Miles was in the hospital for a stab wound to the shoulder, when the attack occurred. Authorities say he was intoxicated, uncooperative with the hospital's staff, and verbally abusive to officers. As part of a settlement reached, the city agreed to a $125,000 payout to resolve allegations. Chicago Police Superintendent Jody Weis, who officially takes office Feb. 1, 2008 plans to take a closer look at taking further action against Officer Cozzi, and has vowed to crack down on misconduct.
