Union Workers
New York, NY: (Jan-22-08) Several unions brought a lawsuit against Amtrak, over wage increase demands. The suit dealt with a wage hike for the period from Jan. 1, 2000, to Dec. 31, 2009. The eight-year-old dispute, involved nine unions representing about half of Amtrak's 15,000 employees, who threatened to go on strike from Jan. 31, if demands were not considered. Sources close to the case stated that union representatives signed a tentative new contract with the company, avoiding the possibility of a Jan. 31 nationwide strike by agreeing to increase wages by an average of 35.2%. The agreement would include a $12,800 payout per worker for the period from Jan. 1, 2000, to Dec. 31, 2009. A presidential panel set up to prevent a walkout sided with the workers Dec. 30, 2007 saying Amtrak may have to pay $62 million in back wages and drop proposed work-rule changes.
