Numbing Fumes
Totnes, England: (Jan-25-08) Joan Brady, a Whitbread prize-winning author, filed charges against the Conker Shoe Co., alleging that the fumes from the factory were detrimental to her career. Brady, 67, said she was forced to work on less demanding novels when the fumes from chemicals used at the Conker Shoe next to her former home allegedly caused her legs and hands to go numb. She also claimed that the factory's loud noise added to her inability to focus on her book, "Cool Wind from the Future," which has yet to be finished after eight years of work. Experts from Guy's Hospital in London confirmed Brady's nerve damage was probably the result of chemicals. Sources close to the case stated that as part of a settlement reached, Brady was awarded more than $225,500, resolving the dispute. Conker officials said the company denied all liability, but agreed to settle so as to avoid the costs of litigation.
