Pass Code Sharing
Newark, NJ: (Jan-30-08) CoStar Group, Inc. filed charges against Laser Marketing, Inc., a lead marketing firm doing business under the name Atkinson Hunt, and Resource Realty of Southern New Jersey, alleging that the companies illegally gained access to its information service. The suit claimed that the two firms shared a CoStar pass code, and that Resource Realty provided Atkinson Hunt with a CoStar pass code that had been assigned to a subscriber's name at Resource Realty. CoStar officials stated that using fraud-detection technology, CoStar determined that the pass code assigned to Resource Realty was used illegally and repeatedly from the offices of Atkinson Hunt to access CoStar's information services.
Company officials said that sharing CoStar pass codes is theft, plain and simple, and is strictly prohibited under the license agreement that all subscribers sign. As part of a settlement reached, CoStar Group said that the United States District Court of Maryland recently entered a judgment of $100,000, resolving the dispute. [COSTAR GROUP: PASS CODE SHARING]
